Dr Surabhi Liyanage is a General Adult psychiatrist. She initially completed a Bachelor of Medical Science at the University of Sydney in 2002 and subsequently graduated with Honours in a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Sydney in 2006. Further pursuing interests in academia and to enhance her research background, Dr Liyanage completed a PhD at the University of New South Wales in 2014. She undertook specialist psychiatry training through the Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Psychiatry (RANZCP) and was awarded her Fellowship in 2022.


To complement her many specialties and qualifications, Dr Liyange also speaks English and Sinhalese.

My Bio

Dr Liyanage has a wide range of clinical experience, having worked in multiple settings in both the public and private sectors, in a variety of medical and surgical fields for over 10 years prior to specialising in psychiatry. She, therefore, brings a balanced and holistic perspective to the care of her patients. Dr Liyanage is also currently employed as a Staff Specialist Psychiatrist at Westmead Hospital. Over the years, she has been involved in teaching junior doctors and medical students at the University of Sydney. She is also an accredited supervisor for RANZCP trainees.


Dr Liyanage has the skills and expertise to attend to a wide range of mental health issues across the adult age spectrum, incorporating current evidence-based practice. She endeavours to effectively engage her patients, their families and caregivers. Dr Liyanage advocates for an integrated model of care and utilises a combination of biological treatments and psychotherapeutic modalities tailored to the needs of the individual and designed to promote their recovery.

My Specialties

Dr Liyanage has a special interest in the treatment of Mood Disorders, Anxiety Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and illnesses in the psychotic spectrum. Dr Liyanage perceives all patient interactions as opportunities for cultivating positive change. She ascribes to the view that treatment outcomes are optimised when developed in partnership with patients and their families, where appropriate. Thus, a collaborative alliance is formed in the patient’s best interests.


Dr Liyanage has recently undertaken the provision of Telehealth services in order to reach a broader community which she may be able to help, particularly in regional and remote areas within Australia.
